COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
MARLINESPIKE (MANILA ROPE)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to GGG-M-00100.
This description covers marlinespike with eye for use in opening and separating strands of manila rope for splicing.
Salient characteristics.
Material used in the construction of the marlinespike shall be made from a minimum of 10/40 carbon steel. The marlinespike shall be hardened to approximately two thirds of the length from the point and shall all show a Rockwell hardness of not less than 45 nor more than 55 on the C scale. Hardness shall be tested in accordance with ASTM E 18.
The issue of the ASTM test method in effect on the date of the solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with these requirements.
The pointed end of the spike shall be oval wedge shaped to
assist in loosening and opening rope strands. The head shall be beveled to
provide a comfortable grip in the palm of the hand. The eye shall be smooth and
edges rounded to prevent cutting or chafing the lanyard used for hanging the
spike.
Dimensions: The marlinespike shall conform to the dimensions specified
in the figure below:
Finish on the marlinespike shall be smoothly polished and free from burrs.
Each marlinespike shall be marked in a plain and permanent manner with the
manufacturer’s name or with a trademark of such known character that the source
of manufacturer may be readily identifiable.
Workmanship. The marlinespike shall be free from any defects that would
affect appearance or serviceability or durability.
Examination of the end item for defects in dimensions and workmanship.
The sample unit for this examination shall be one marlinespike. The inspection
level shall be S-2 with an acceptable quality level (AQL) of 4.0 expressed in
term of percent defective in accordance with MIL-STD-105.
