COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
LADLE, MELTING, HAND
The General Services Administration, has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to GGG-L-51 , Type I.
This description covers double lip ladle generally used fpr plumbers for transporting and pouring molten metals and occasionally used for melting metals such as lead, colder, and babbitt.
Salient characteristics.
Material used in the construction of the ladle shall be grade 1008 hot rolled in accordance with the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) or equivalent steel, malleable iron, wrought iron, cast iron, or iron alloy passing high heat retentivity qualities. The ladle shall be provided with two lips on the top rim of the bowl. Each of the lips shall be located at a right angle to the center line of the handle. The ladle shall have a smooth, even surface in accordance with industry practice.
The ladle shall be capable of resisting thermal shock when tested as follows:
“Ladle examples shall be heated to 700 degrees F. , plus or minus 20 degrees F. , and quenched in water at approximately 70 degree F. , and shall be subjected to a light tap on the aide of the bowl to obtain a clear resonant ring. A flat nonresonant ring indicates an invisible crack and shall be cause for rejection. “
The handle of the ladle shall be either integral or attached to the bowl in such a manner to preclude it from working loose under service conditions.

Each ladle shall be marked in a plain and permanent manner with the manufacturer ‘s name or with a trademark of such known character that the source of manufacture may be readily identifiable.
Dimensions. The dimensions of the ladles shall conform to the table below and when ordering, the diameter of the bowl shall be as specified in the contract or order.
