COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
KEY, COWL FASTENER
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial
item description in preference to GGG-P-K-266.
This description covers one type of key for use in locking
and unlocking cowl fasteners on airplanes or other equipment and is assigned
National Stock Number 5120-00-604-5007.
Salient characteristics.
The body shall be constructed of steel conforming to grade 1095 of ASTM A108 or
MIL-STD-7947. The material shall be heat-treated to a Rockwell hardness of not
less than 42 nor more than 48 on the C scale. The Rockwell hardness test shall
be conducted in accordance with ASTM E18.
The finish on the body shall be chrome plating, nickel-plating, zinc-plate, hot
phosphating, or oxide coating.
The handle shall be straight grained hardwood or of polyolefin. The handle
shall be securely attached to the body. If made of hardwood, the finish shall
be satin and protected by a coat of varnish or lacquer to prevent absorption of
moisture. The varnish or lacquer shall be transparent so as not to conceal the
grain or wood. When tested as specified below, plastic handles shall not burn
at a rate exceeding 2 inches per minute.
The dimensions specified in inches shall conform to the figure below. The
tolerance for fractional dimension is + 1/16; for decimal dimension the
tolerance shall be + 0.005. The illustration is for convenience of
identification and is not intended to preclude the purchase of keys which are
in accordance with this description.
Identification marking. Each key shall be stamped or etched
in a permanent and legible manner with the manufacturer’s name or identifying
symbol of such known character that the source may be readily identifiable,
part number and country of origin.
Workmanship. The key shall be free from any defects that would affect
appearance, serviceability, or durability.
