COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CROWBAR
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description in preference to Federal Specification GGG-B-101, Type II, Classes 1 and 2, Sizes 2 and 4.
This commercial item description covers crowbars.
SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
Materials. Material used in the manufacture of the bars shall be either tool steel or an alloy steel. The chemical composition of the material and the heat treatment employed shall be such as to produce bars to withstand the specified tests. All forgings shall be of uniform quality, free from defects and imperfections that may affect their serviceability or durability. Special quality, fine grain, hot rolled or cold finished carbon steel may also be used.
Design. The bars, otherwise meeting the requirements of this specification, may be the manufacturer’s standard design.
Finish. The bars shall be free from burrs, roughness and excessive oxide scale. The body of the bars shall be either lacquered, enameled, painted, or have an oil-coated natural finish. The work ends of Type II bars shall have a satin finish, and shall be oil or phosphate coated, lacquered or painted.
Type II, crowbars. Crowbars shall have a round handle tapering slightly toward the handle end. The work end shall be equal in width to the distance across the flat surfaces of the bar. The bar shall not fracture nor show a permanent set when tested in accordance with the physical test.
Hardness. The work end of the bar shall show a Rockwell C hardness of not less than 38 nor more than 48, or a hardness reading of not less than 353 nor more than 455 on the Brinell scale.

Class 1, pinch-point. The formed end of class 1 bars shall have square sides with a flat single beveled edge. The bars shall conforms to table I and be similar to figure 1.
