COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION

BAR, PRY (ROLLING - HEAD)

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal Specification GGG-B-101, Type IV.

This commercial item description covers rolling-head pry bars.

SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS

Material. The material used in the manufacture of the bars shall be either tool steel or an alloy steel. The chemical composition of the material and the heat treatment employed shall be such as to produce bars to withstand the specified tests. All forgings shall be of uniform quality, free from defects and imperfections that may affect their serviceability or durability. Special quality, fine grain, hot rolled or cold finished carbon steel may also be used.

Design. The bars, otherwise meeting the requirements of this specification, may be the manufacturer’s standard design.

Finish. The bars shall be free from burrs, roughness and excessive oxide scale. The work ends of Type IV bars shall have a natural finish, and shall be oil-coated, lacquered, or painted.

Type IV, pry (rolling-head). Pry bars shall have the work end terminate in a round rolling head. The back side of the rolling head shall be rounded. That portion of the head opposite the rounded side shall form a hook. The tapered end of the bar shall be round, smoothly finished, uniformly tapered, and shall be provided with a pointed end.

Hardness. The work end of the bar shall show a Rockwell C hardness of not less than 38 nor more than 48, or a hardness reading of not less than 353 nor more than 455 on the Brinell scale.

Type IV bars shall conform to table I and be similar to figure 1.
