COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
BAR, WRECKING
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description by all federal agencies.
1. SCOPE. This commercial item description covers wrecking bars.
2. CLASSIFICATION. The wrecking bars shall conform to the following types.
2.1 Type I. Gooseneck and Pinch-Point.
2.2 Type II. Offset Claw and Pinch-Point.
3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
3.1 Design.
3.1.1 Type I. The bar shall have one end bent in the form of a gooseneck and the opposite end in the form of a pinch point. The gooseneck provided shall have a slotted claw suitable for pulling nails. The pinch point end shall be wedge shaped and offset at an angle of 30 degrees +/- 5 degrees from the longitudinal axis of the bar. The type I bar shall conform to the table and be similar to figure 1.
3.1.2 Type II. The bar shall have the ends offset at an angle of 30 degrees +/-5 degrees from the longitudinal axis in opposite directions from each other. Both ends shall be wedge shaped with a slotted claw on one end suitable for pulling nails. The type II bars shall conform to the table and be similar to figure 2.
3.1.3 Type I and II bars. Otherwise meeting the requirements of this specification may be the manufacturer’s standard design passing a physical test. A test load value as shown in table 1 for the appropriate size of bar being tested shall be applied to the body at a point 4 inches from one end, with tie opposite end secured. The load being applied shall be perpendicular to the body in a direction as to straighten the offset or gooseneck. The wrecking bar, after being tested shall indicate no fracture or permanent set in excess of l/32-inch from the original shape.
3.1.4 Material. The material used in manufacturing the bars shall either be tool steel or art alloy steel. The work ends of the bars shall have hardness between 38 and 48 on the Rockwell C scale in accordance with ASTM E-18.
