COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
WEDGE, TIMBER (FELLING)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in lieu of Type I, Federal Specification GGG-W-220.
Scope. This description establishes requirements for timber wedges used for felling trees.
Salient characteristics:
Material. High-grade carbon steel
Design. The wedges shall be rectangular in cross section and the broad sides tapered uniformly in thickness from the head to the bit edge. The narrow sides of the wedges shall be gradually tapered from the bit end (dimension A) to the head.
Hardness. The hardness of the wedges at a minimum of 1 inch from the bit end shall show a Rockwell hardness of 41-45 on the C scale.
Finish. The wedges shall have a smooth even surface, free of rust, scale, pits, nodules, and burrs. Surfaces not usually ground shall have a protective black oxide coating or suitable paint coating.

1. The tolerance for the overall length shall be plus or minus 1/2 inch.
2. The tolerance for width of bit edge and dimension of the head shall be plus or minus 1/4 inch.
Identification marking. Each wedge shall be etched or stamped in a permanent and legible manner with the manufacturer’s name or identifying symbol, part number and country of origin.
Workmanship. The wedges shall be free from imperfections which may affect their appearance, serviceability, or durability. All surfaces and edges shall be free of defects which may be injurious to the user.
