COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
RAKE (ASPHALT, ROAD)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for the Type II-Road Rake specified in GGG-R-0080 for all federal agencies.
1. SCOPE. This Commerical Item Description covers a road rake used in road building, paving work, and gravel work.
2. CLASSIFICATION
Not applicable.
3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
3.1 Material. Material used in the construction of the rake shall be of uniform quality and free from defects that may affect the serviceability, durability, or safety of the rake.
3.2 Design. The rake shall consist essentially of a long wood handle with a steel rake head, steel shank and steel tangs for moving asphalt and gravel.
3.3 Handle. The rake handle shall be of Ash wood. All portions of the handle shall be smoothly finished and shall be adequately covered with two durable coats of transparent lacquer, varnish or with one coat of water base latex emulsion after surface treatment utilizing heat, (both, flame treating or charring). The coating shall be applied in such a manner to permit visual Inspection of the wood and to prevent absorption of water.
3.4 Handle dimensions. The overall length and width dimension shall be in accordance with Table II.
3.5 Head dimensions. The number of teeth and the dimensions of depth, and thickness dimensions shall be in accordance with table II.
3.6 Hardness of head and teeth. The head and teeth of the rake shall be HRB 90 minimum, when
tested in accordance with ASTM E-18.
