COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
ICE SCRAPER AND CHIPPER, SIDEWALK
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for the ice scraper specified in GGG-I-100B for all federal agencies.
1. SCOPE
This Commercial Item Description covers a long-handled tool for scraping, chopping, or removing ice or light snow from walkways.
2. CLASSIFICATION. Not applicable.
3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
3.1 Design. The scraper shall consist of a flat blade and a long, straight handle.
3.2 Blade. The blade shall be of high grade steel of uniform quality. The socket for the handle shall be a minimum of 3-1/4 inches in depth. The socket and shank shall be forged integrally with the blade. The cutting edge of the blade shall be sharpened or beveled. The blade shall be a minimum of 6-5/8 inches wide and a minimum of 5-1/4 inches high. The blade thickness shall be a minimum of 0.090 inch at any point measured above the cutting edge.
3.3 Blade hardness. The blade shall be hardened to 25 to 47 on the Rockwell C hardness scale. When required, the blade hardness shall be tested in accordance with ASTM E18.
3.4 Handle. The handle shall be of seasoned SA grade ash conforming to NN-H-81. The handle shall be smoothly finished and cover with one coat of transparent lacquer, varnish, or wax or one coat after surface treatment utilizing heat, such as flame-treating or charring. The coating shall be applied in a manner to permit visual inspection of the wood and prevent absorption of water.
3.5 Overall length. The overall length of the scraper shall be 55 to 65 inches long.
3.6 Identification marking. The scraper shall be marked with the manufacturer’s name or identifying symbol, and the state or country of manufacture, unless otherwise specified. All identification markings shall be engraved, etched, molded, or indented directly on the Item’s surface in such a manner that it remains clearly legible throughout the life of the item.
