COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
REMOVAL TOOL, OIL FILTER
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description for procurement of type I removal tool specified in GGG-R-200B for all federal agencies.
1. SCOPE.
1.1 Scope. This Commercial Item Description covers an end gripping oil filter removal tool used for removing disposable oil filters from automotive vehicles.
2. CLASSIFICATION.
2.1 Classification. Not applicable.
3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
3.1 Design. Each removal tool, oil filter shall be so designed and constructed as to be capable of gripping and removing disposable oil filters having an outside diameter within a range of 3- 15/32 to 3-3/4 inches. The removal tool shall be of a clamp design which mounts on the end of the oil filter, and its two clamping members shall extend and clamp onto the outside diameter of the oil filter when operated by a wrench. For wrenching purposes, the tool shall be provided with a stud having a hexagonal-shaped head. The hexagonal head shall have a nominal dimension of 1 inch across flats and a”1/2-inch female square drive. The portion where the wrench is applied shall be at least 5/8 inch in height. The two clamping members shall be of steel, thoroughly hardened, at least 1/8 inch in nominal thickness. The tool shall be self-adjusting and self-locking by manipulating the hexagonal headed stud. The tool shall be similar to Figure 1.
3.2 Finish. The ferrous metal components shall be plated, phosphate
coated, or oxide coated so as to provide good corrosion resistance.
