COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
MATTOCK (PICK, WITHOUT HANDLE)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in lieu of Type II, Class F, Federal Specification GGG-H-506.
Scope. This description establishes requirements for a mattock used for grubbing, loosening the soil and digging up roots.
Salient characteristics:
Material. Forged carbon steel
Design. Flat shaped blade one side with pick in opposite end
Hardness. The mattock shall show Rockwell hardness of 37-50 on the C scale. The mattock shall exhibit the specified harness at any point within 3/4 (+ 1/32) inch from the blade or pick.
Finish. The mattock shall be coated with paint, oil, or any other rust resistant material.

Identification marking. Each mattock shall be etched or stamped in a permanent and legible manner with the manufacturer’s name or identifying symbol, part number and country of origin.
Workmanship. The mattock shall be free from imperfections which may affect their appearance, serviceability, or durability. All surfaces and edges shall be free of defects which may be injurious to the user, except for the tip and point edges.
QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
Sampling for inspection and testing of the item. Sampling shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-105, Sampling Procedures and Tables for Inspection by Attributes. The lot size shall consist of all mattocks offered for acceptance at one time. The sample unit is one mattock.
Visual inspection. The inspection level shall be level II with an acceptable quality level (AQL) of 4.0 defects per hundred units.
