COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
MATTOCK (CUTTER, WITHOUT HANDLE)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description in lieu of Type II, Class D, Federal Specification GGG-H-506
Scope. This description establishes requirements for mattocks used for grubbing, loosening the soil, digging up and cutting roots.
Salient characteristics:
Material. Forged carbon steel.
Design. Flat shaped blade one side with cutter blade opposite
Hardness. The mattocks shall show a Rockwell hardness of 37-50 on the C scale. The mattocks shall exhibit the specified hardness at any point within ¾ (+ 1/32) inch from the blade.
Finish. The mattocks shall be coated with paint, oil, or any other rust-resistant material.

Identification marking. Each mattock shall be etched or stamped in a permanent and legible manner with the manufacturer’s name or identifying symbol, part number and country of origin.
Workmanship. The mattocks shall be free from imperfections which may affect their appearance, serviceability, or durability. All surfaces and edges shall be free of defects which may be injurious to the user, except for the cutting edges.
