COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CLAMP, C (HEAVY SERVICE)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description in lieu of Type I, Class D, Federal
Specification GGG-C-406.
Scope: This description establishes requirements for a C-clamp (heavy service) used for clamping and holding work in a fixed position.
Salient characteristics:
Material. Materials used in the manufacture of clamps shall be uniform quality and free from defects and imperfections that may affect their serviceability or durability.
Frame. Steel, heat treated or malleable iron, designed to withstand minimum loads specified without evidence of damage or permanent deformation. The anvil of the frame shall have a smooth flat surface perpendicular to the center line of the class 2B, or better, right-hand threaded hole.
Screw. The screw shall be made of steel having a minimum tensile strength of 125,000 p.s.i and be hardened to Rockwell C 22 minimum. The outer end of the screw shall have square wrenching surface with an across the flats dimension not less than the major diameter of the screw. The inner end of the screw shall have a cylindrical portion with a diameter approximately equal to the minor diameter of the threaded portion of the screw.
Finish. All surfaces of the clamps shall have a smooth finish with all edges rounded or beveled and shall be thoroughly cleaned and free of all foreign matter, fins, scale, flux, or any other imperfection.
Illustration. The clamps shall be similar to the illustration shown below.
