COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION CARRIER, STORAGE BATTERY, HAND
The General Services Administration, has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description for all Federal agencies.
1. SCOPE. This Commercial Item Description covers the requirements for hand transported storage carriers which are used in automotive and battery service stations. They are used to facilitate the safe handling of storage batteries and to prevent breakage and accidental contact by personnel with spilled acid.
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
2.1 Type I. The type I carrier shall consist of a strap with a battery post grip permanently held in place on each end of the strap. The battery post grips shall be disk or ring type designed to hold the battery posts securely when under lifting tension, and shall have adequate clearance to release easily when relaxed. Post grips shall be resistant to corrosion and rust. Straps shall be designed of material that is resistant to battery acid. Type I carrier overall length shall be of the following sizes: 14, 17, 21, and 24 inches, as specified in the contract or order.
2.2 Type II. The type II carrier shall consist of tongs with a carrying handle and battery case gripping pads. Tongs shall be designed with an action which will cause the gripping pads to close evenly against the battery sides when lifting force is applied to the handle. Gripping pads surfaces shall not damage battery case surfaces. The tongs shall be hinged with a pin or notched lever design to incorporate an adjustment range between gripping pads. The tongs shall be designed to pick up an automotive battery that is, as a minimum, 5 inches in width.
