COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION

BAR, PINCH (OFFSET)

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Federal Specification GGG-B-101, Type III.

SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS

Material. The material used in this manufacture of the bars shall be either tool steel or an alloy steel. The chemical composition of the material and the heat treatment employed shall be such as to produce bars to withstand the specified tests. All forgings shall be of uniform quality, free from defects and imperfections that may affect their serviceability or durability. Special quality, fine grain, hot rolled or cold finished carbon steel may also be used.

Design. The bars, otherwise meeting the requirements of this specification, may be the manufacturer’s standard design.

Finish. The bars shall be free from burrs, roughness, and excessive oxide scale. The body of the bars shall be either lacquered, enameled, painted, or have an oil-coated natural finish. The work ends of Type III bars shall have a natural finish, and shall be oil-coated, lacquered, or painted.

Type III, pinch (offset) bars. Pinch bars shall have one end rounded and offset. The other end shall be round and tapered for bringing holes into alignment in metal plates.

Hardness. The work end of the bar shall show a Rockwell C hardness of not less than 35 nor more than 45, or a hardness reading of not less than 327 nor more than 421 on the Brinell scale.

Type III bars shall conform to table I and be similar to figure 1.
