HAMMER, ROCK
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to MIL-H-1431.
Abstract. This commercial item description covers a rock climbing hammer to be used for hammering pitons into cracks in rock faces, testing the rock density prior to piton placement, testing the security of the piton once hammered into place, and removing pitons and chocks from the rock cracks.
1. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
1.1 Description. The rock climbing hammer shall have an oiled hickory handle not less than 26 centimeters (10.25 inches) and not more than 31 centimeters (12.20 inches) in length. The hammer head shall be stainless steel, weigh not less than 510 grams (1.1 pounds) and not more than 567 grams (1.3 pounds), and have both a striking face for driving pitons. The hammer head shall be permanently attached to the hickory handle. Each hammer shall have a replaceable tubular nylon webbing leash, approximately 54 centimeters (21.26 inches) in length, attached into the base of the hammer handle for easy insertion and removal from a climbing holster.
1.2 Finish. The surface roughness of striking face shall be 317.5 microcentimeters (125 microinches) to 635.0 microcentimeters (250 microinches).
